Common Questions About Your Dentures
Posts by: / no comments / Add Comment
Dentures are a common form of tooth replacement for people that are missing several teeth. They have been used by people for hundreds of years and were once made of bone, ivory, or even wood! Nowadays, dentures can be made of different materials such as plastic resins or even porcelain.
How long do dentures last?
Dentures can last a long time if you care for them properly. Over time, the fit will loosen as the shape of your jawbone changes. You will probably have to have the interior lining retooled every seven years or so to accommodate these changes. At some point, you might even have to have the entire denture remade.
Do I have to have lost all my teeth to wear dentures?
When people think of dentures, many assume you mean a full denture; that is, a denture that replaces all of the teeth on the top, bottom, or both. However, dentures can be used instead of a bridge to replace one or two teeth, or, for example, all the front teeth. You and Dr. Badwalz can decide what method of tooth replacement is best for you.
How long does it take to adjust the dentures?
Dr. Badwalz will give you some ideas about how to adjust. Suggestions include:
- -Practice talking and eating at home until you feel comfortable
- -Start with soft foods
- -Chew with equal amounts on either side of your mouth
- -Avoid hard or chewy foods
These approaches can help avoid discomfort or embarrassment when you debut your new teeth outside your own home.
How do I take care of my dentures?
It’s important to keep your dentures clean to prevent bacteria buildup beneath them. You should take them out at least once a day and brush them per your dentist’s instructions. Also be sure to keep them wet and avoid food or activities that could damage, stain, or break them.
