Facts About Your Saliva
Saliva has many important functions in our mouth. Besides helping us eat, speak, and protect our teeth from cavities and decay, it also can help detect health problems. Here is a list of a few surprising facts you may not have known about saliva.
Saliva is 99% Water
It is important to stay hydrated so that your body can function properly. A dry mouth can lead to you not being able to taste food, speak properly, or maintain the right amount of water in your body.
We Produce Less Saliva at Night
When we sleep our body relaxes and everything slows down. Our saliva production decreases, and as a result, bacteria in our mouth are able to grow and multiply. This is one of the reasons why we have morning breath.
Have you ever noticed how a dog or cat will lick their wounds to heal them? That is because saliva contains immune cells and other healing agents that help speed up the healing process. In humans, an injury in our mouth will heal the quickest because our saliva also contains antimicrobial cells, immune cells, and other antibodies that fight germs, promote skin cell growth and blood clotting.
You Have 6 Salivary Glands
These six glands work together to produce 2 liters of saliva a day! In one year, enough is produced to fill two medium sized bath tubs.
Saliva Can Reveal Your Age
The DNA in our saliva changes over time. A chemical process happens that activates certain genes and shuts down others. Scientists are able to use this information to guess a person’s age to within five years of their actual age.
