Think You Have Tartar?
Tartar is a hard calcified deposit that forms on teeth.
What Causes Tartar & Where Does It Come From?
Tartar is mainly caused by bacteria and calcium build-up in our mouths. Bacteria in our mouth mixes with food and other proteins to create a sticky film called plaque that coats our teeth. It is necessary to brush and floss every day to minimize the amount of harmful bacteria and plaque that we have. If the plaque is ignored it will harden and turn into tartar.
Why is it Bad?
Tartar buildup will make it harder to brush and floss your teeth. It usually forms along the gum line which can lead to inflammation and/or decay. If it is not taken care of early, the buildup will continue and can lead to other dental problems such as periodontitis.
How to Prevent It
The easiest way to prevent tartar is to brush and floss your teeth every day as well as seeing Dr. Badwalz regularly for cleanings. Also make sure to reduce the amount of sugary foods that you eat since this is what the bad bacteria thrive on.
